| Introduction | ||
| Neurosurgery encompasses the whole range of surgical, ie operative, treatments to a wide variety of conditions affecting all parts of the nervous system. This includes conditions affecting the brain, the spinal cord and the peripheral nerves. Neurosurgery uses all the modern surgical techniques, including minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery, the operating microscope, the neuro endoscope, as well as hi-tech implants such as adjustable ventriculo-peritoneal shunts, and spinal fixation devices. Investigations for neurosurgical disease include CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as well as angiography, electro-encephalography (EEG) and peripheral nerve conduction studies. This site contains a list of the broad categories of neurosurgical conditions and under each one can also be found a list of common and lay terms associated with each. Details of the more frequently performed neurosurgical operations can be found under the operations menu. This menu, for the special topics menu are currently being reviewed and expanded. | ||
